Kira Janina Schmidt read history and geography at LMU Munich. During her studies, she was a student assistant at the Department for Contemporary History from 2014 to 2016, working on the project “Die Münchner Stadtverwaltung im Nationalsozialismus”. After an internship at the German Historical Institute in London (GHIL) in 2016, supported by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange), she completed her studies in March 2018 with a master’s degree in history. Her thesis was on Dr. Magda Staudinger, a key figure in the creation of UNESCO's “Man and the Biosphere Programme” (MAB).

In June 2018, she started her dissertation project, “Network Building and Negotiation Processes in European Alpine Transit Policy”. It is part of the DFG-DACH project, “Issues with Europe - A Network Analysis of the German-Speaking Alpine Conservation Movement (1975-2005)”. 

Kira joined the Rachel Carson's Center's Environment and Society doctoral programme in October 2018.
